Where is “ Maggiora Terreno edificabile” ?
Located in the heart of Piedmont, Maggiora is a municipality of about 1,700 inhabitants, known as the birthplace of the famous architect Alessandro Antonelli.
The first evidence of human presence in the Maggiora area dates back to the Iron Age, as shown by archaeological finds. Over the centuries, the village underwent several dominations, including Roman and Longobard ones. In 1736, Maggiora became part of the possessions of the House of Savoy, under whose rule it experienced a period of economic and cultural development.
The Antonelli family, originally from Maggiora, gave birth to Alessandro Antonelli (1798-1888), author of important architectural works such as the Mole Antonelliana in Turin and the cathedral of San Gaudenzio in Novara. The Antonelli house in Maggiora, located in the centre of the village, was a veritable architectural workshop, where Alessandro Antonelli experimented with new building techniques and architectural solutions for over thirty years.
Worthy of note is the parish church of the Spirito Santo, a Baroque building constructed on a pre-existing structure. The interior, rich in stuccoes and statues, preserves valuable works of art, including the high altar in polychrome marble, from the Carmine church in Novara, and the paintings in the apse, attributed to important 17th-century painters. The main square of Maggiora is overlooked by Palazzo Imbrici, the current seat of the town hall.
Maggiora is animated by numerous events throughout the year, including the patronal festival of Sant’Agapito, celebrated on 18 August, and the Sagra dell’Uva, held in September.
